Daring Bits
20-Years in Jail for VPN?! - The “TikTok Ban Bill” isn’t really about TikTok. It’s about a state take-over of all communication platforms and the hardware that accesses them. This bill makes the so-called Patriot Act look friendly.
The El Salvador Un-Tax - El Salvador President Nayib Bukele is sending a bill to Congress that will “eliminate all taxes (income, property, capital gains and import tariffs) on technology innovations, such as software programming, coding, apps and AI development; as well as computing and communications hardware manufacturing.” Is it time to brush up on our Spanish?
Dolly Democratizes LLMs - “We believe models like Dolly will help democratize LLMs, transforming them from something very few companies can afford into a commodity every company can own and customize to improve their products.”
Juice, the Essential Non-Essential - Want your games and apps to _feel _like they’re good? Give them some juice.
Gordon Moore Dies at 94 - Gordon Moore has died. Long live Moore’s Law… unless WW3 stops transistor growth.
WebAssembly Tug of War - Different technical approaches are in a marathon to make the web platform a universal operating system. Paul Butler is rooting for the WASI/components, because he doesn’t think apps should have to pay the JavaScript tax. Why is all this taking so long, though?
WebAssembly Ressurrects Flash - “Ruffle is a Flash Player emulator written in Rust.” It even works on mobile. So dust off all those Flash games you worked so hard on. Since it’s written in Rust, they’d have you believe Flash is safe now. But what does that mean for Flash Cookies? [Ed: i hate flash, it should stay dead in the fire in which it died.]
AI Will Disrupt White Collar And Creative Jobs First - Robots are coming for the white collars first. On the bright side, could they help deflate inflation?
GrapheneOS Sandboxes Google - GrapheneOS is a privacy-focused custom ROM for Pixel devices. Normally, protecting privacy with a custom ROM means sacrificing the convenience of Google services. GrapheneOS has found a way to sandbox Google’s standard apps so that they must follow the same permissions as any other app. Other neat privacy features include scrambled PIN input, sensors permission toggle, and auto reboot. Once Android Auto and Google Maps can run on Graphene, we’ll be off to the proverbial races.
